Time to Get Back to Work

Well, after a year off it’s time to get back to work. Both updating this site and on the house. Stay tuned to find out the work we have planned for this offseason and REGISTER your vote! Coming soon we will be posting a survey open to all of our past renters. We want your input on upcoming changes to the upper unit.

In the meantime, we haven’t been completely “resting”. This past week we installed a brand new dishwasher in the upstairs unit. Someday I’ll pay off that Lowes credit card….

We did it. We’re finally done the upstairs. We hope you all enjoy the improvements. Stop down the lower apartment and say hi, we’ll be there finishing up until late June.

Heavenly Carpet

It’s in! And we LOVE it! I think we’ll be doing the main bedroom level this fall. It’s just so nice. We also installed a new bath fixture on the top level clawfoot tub. I was so worried that we’d get the old one half out and run into major problems. Fortunately all it took was elbow grease. This fall I plan to add a true shower riser to the new fixture allowing one to take a bath, use the handshower or use a stand up shower. The other big Friday project was adding a gate to the front porch allowing all of our canine friends to enjoy the summer breezes without being leashed. Frosty tried it out and gave it two paws up.

We have tenants coming in this Saturday and we’re pushing to get everything squared away. Our carpet is due to be put in tomorrow, just under the wire. We both can’t wait to see it! We’re having the whole family down to help out with the last bits and to get a glimpse of the upstairs before our summer guests arrive.

We’re nearing completion on this LONG project. Electric is due to be turned on next week. Carpet installers are on deck for the new attic carpet. Fresh paint has been applied to the upstairs – and it looks so nice!

A Mother’s Day to Remember

Mother’s Day 2008….laying sod. Oh what fun! However, I’m glad to be out working and pushing this closer and closer to completion. Although JD and I are still annoyed that the city made us rip out the cement onsite, we do have to admit the grass and pavers look nice. Now we are just hoping the grass lives!

Making a Classic Memory

Yesterday was another visit to the shore house. We took in the new siding, which we think turned out great! It’s a darker blue, but it’s still “My Blue Heaven”. We tour the downstairs unit, which is looking good with the framing all done. The rooms certainly aren’t large, but they are enough for the shore – the beach is the real attraction! We also placed Ryan, Jackson and Frosty’s handprints in the concrete – making the classic home building memory.

The Money Pit

Remember the classic 80s movie where everything costs twice as much as estimated and the contractor keeps say “two weeks”? We’re living it! Not really, but the costs are adding up quickly (did you know they make tiles that are over $100 sqft – who buys those?). And we do love our contractor, he is JD’s brother after all. But it does seem like it’s going super slow! The city has four thousand inspections and their turnaround time leaves something to be desired.

Should We Be Watching This?

Today we packed up the the kids and drove to the shore for the big event….separating the house from the foundation. It was fairly early in the morning so I didn’t have a drink as I planned. Maybe I should’ve! They had already slid the steel beams through the house before we got there. As we arrived they were separating the house between the first and second floors with saws. Then they lifted it with a much smaller compressor than I would’ve imagined and at times, a hand jack! It was, all in all, much more low-tech than I imagined.
