Under the Boardwalk is a cozy beach rental within an easy walk to the beach, boardwalk and many attractions. This unit will sleep up to 7 persons with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. For your comfort, we recommend a maximum of 4 adults. If you need extra room, remember there are two other units on the same street to choose from!

This unit is brand new, but built onsite of a turn of the century beach home. Confused? Here’s the story….

My husband and I bought this home before we had children, with grand plans. The home had a spacious and charming upstairs unit, which we planned to rent in order to afford the home. We would also rent the lower unit, a small 2 bedroom apartment, for a few years until we had children. Along came the kids and we spent summers on the weekends in the downstairs unit. Unfortunately, it had a 6′ high ceiling…. hubby is 6′1″.  The unit had also been rented for many a summer to “college students” and was quite shop-worn. Finally, we could put up with it no longer. So this past winter we renovated. We had always planned to do this. It was an extensive project and required a zoning approval. So we actually started this whole process back in early 2006. First, came architectual drawings in preparation for our zoning board hearing.

In the fall of 2006 we were scheduled for our hearing. We passed with a narrow margin of 5-4. Believe or not, the sticking point was our trash cans. They were very obsessed with where our trash cans would go! (I had a few ideas about where the could put them…but this is a family site ;) By the time we were approved, it was too late to be able to start and complete renovations for the summer 2007 season. So we sat out another long summer with my husband and I, our 2 year old, one on the way, and our puppy. It was crowded and uncomfortable! Finally in the fall of 2007, renovations began. First the heavy machinery came in to place steel beams between the ground floor and the second floor. Then we basically sawed the house around the perimeter separating the first and second floors. Then we raised the whole upstairs up 2 feet! Yes, it was nerve-wracking!

We then demolished the old lower unit. We were able to redesign the unit bringing it from a 2 bedroom, 1 bath to a 3 bedroom, 2 bath. We made much better use of the space we have and added a bit more than we had. It’s still “cozy”, but it’s perfect for our small family. We were able to have a bedroom for ourselves, one for the children to share and one for the grandparents when they visited. We were also able to add a private bath for ourselves and the second bath really will help with the young toilet training kids. We were also able to enlarge our patio area somewhat, which is wonderful because we love to spend time outdoors. All in all, we are happy with the way it turned out. Sure we would had loved to add more living space, but considering the difficulty we had with the approvals, it would have never had been passed.

Although we built the unit for us and our tastes, we will be renting it out for some weeks.  It was a very expensive renovation, especially when you start adding in the architect fees, lawyers fees, and such. For those of you interested in renting our unit, it is outfitted with everything you need to make your vacation easy and comfortable. With almost every item you could want included, we like to think that we’ve made our place “just like staying with family!” Check out our long list of amenities to see everything we have to offer.
